SOLIDARITY WORKS by Ed Gimenez, Secretary
Recently, there has been a lot of talk about jobs and job security. Compared to our civilian counterparts, our jobs are relatively secure. Yes, there will be cutbacks and shifts in jobs and more scrutiny or accountability for how we spend our time at work. That means that management will be required to manage their resources. But, that is something that should have been done a long time ago.
Where did all this start? We did not create this mess. But, as usual we will be expected to bear the brunt of this. With that said, just what does it really mean? How will if affect us? Who will look out for us to make sure we don't get abused?
The answers to all of those questions can be found by attending your local union meetings. You can find out what steps are being taken by management and what steps the local is taking to defend and protect your job. You can speak to all your local leaders and bring up specific concerns you may have. You can share problem areas that you see.
We all have different backgrounds and experiences in life and that brings different perspectives and views. By uniting, we can pool those vast experiences and help each other through this.
Not only am I encouraging you to attend a local union meeting, but I would like you to bring someone with you—either a member or a nonmember. See what goes on and find out what we are doing on your behalf. The best way to protect your job and the future of the Postal Service is to be a part of the solution, not the problem. Which one are you? |
